After being retired from international cricket, former New Zealand opening batter Martin Guptill feels he had more to contribute to the national side and expressed "a little bit of disappointment with how it all ended." The 38-year-old batter, who gave back his contract to pursue playing opportunities elsewhere in late 2022, officially confirmed his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday. He played 367 games (198 ODIs, 122 T20Is, 47 Tests) for the Black Caps, scoring 23 international centuries across the three formats.

England Test captain Ben Stokes on Tuesday said he had undergone surgery on his injured hamstring. The 33-year-old all-rounder tore his left hamstring during the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton -- England's final game of 2024. That left Stokes requiring surgery and needing a three-month absence. On Tuesday, Stokes posted a picture on Instagram of him in a car supported by a leg brace. He captioned the photo: "Bionic Man for a while." Stokes missed four consecutive Test matches after tearing the same hamstring while playing in the Hundred in August.

Mitchell Santner Named New Zealand White Ball Captain
Spin bowler Mitchell Santner was named New Zealand captain for both white ball formats Wednesday, filling a six-month vacancy since teammate Kane Williamson stood down. Santner, who has played 107 one-day internationals and 106 T20Is, will begin his tenure with a three-match home ODI series against Sri Lanka from December 28. The 32-year-old has previously led New Zealand in 28 white ball matches, some on a stand-in basis after Williamson relinquished the role following the T20 World Cup in June. Santner described the full-time appointment as a "huge honour".
