Caroline Garcia won her second WTA title of the season Sunday as she defeated Romania's Ana Bogdan 6-4, 6-1 in the final in Warsaw.
Unseeded Ana Bogdan of Romania and No. 5 Caroline Garcia of France advanced to the Poland Open finals with straight-sets semifinal wins on Saturday in Warsaw.
She will face Ana Bogdan in Sunday's final after the Romanian also came through in straight sets, beating the Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl 7-5, 7-5. In persistent drizzle, number five seed Garcia crushed the Italian Paolini in just 65 minutes to reach her 12th career singles final and continue a rich run of form which saw her see off Swiatek.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz swept into the semi-finals of the Croatian Open in Umag with a straight-sets win over Facundo Bagnis. Alcaraz, who moved up to world No. 5 after making the Hamburg Open final last week, eased past Bagnis 6-0 6-4.
French Open champion Swiatek had not lost on clay in over a year before going down 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to the 45th-ranked Garcia. Swiatek was 18-0 on clay this season, winning titles at Stuttgart, Rome and Roland Garros, and had only dropped two sets on the surface in 2022.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek suffered a shock loss to Caroline Garcia in the quarter-finals of the Poland Open in Warsaw. Swiatek, who is returning to the WTA Tour after seeing her 37-match winning run ended in the third round of Wimbledon earlier this month, lost 1-6 6-1 4-6.
When it comes to winning streaks the end is always usually more memorable than the beginning. Certainly that was the case with Iga Swiatek’s 37-match unbeaten run, the longest on the WTA Tour this century, which started against Viktorija Golubic in Doha in February and ended in surprisingly one-sided fashion against Alize Cornet at Wimbledon on July 2. Now Swiatek is starting again, returning to action at the Poland Open in Warsaw this week, hoping to spark another streak ahead of the North American swing.
Japan's Nao Hibino upset No. 2 seed and defending champion Barboura Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, rallying for a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 second-round win on Thursday at the Prague Open.
