How a newspaper article changed CWG-bound boxer Sagar Ahlawat's life

Manny Pacquiao marked the beginning of Sagar Ahlawat's boxing dream. Seven years later, the 20-year-old is gearing up for the men's +92kg super heavyweight competition at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where he will be donning the India jersey for the very first time. "I was not good at studies. Mere se padhai hoti hi nahi thi. (I just couldn't study) So, I started looking for something else to do after 12th class," Sagar told PTI. Born to a family of farmers, Sagar had no connection to sports. But one fine day, he came across a full page newspaper article about the famous bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao, considered to be one of the most anticipated sporting events in history. As he read about the two boxing greats and their achievements, it became clear to Sagar where his future lay.

CWG 2022: Not wise to take international opponents lightly, says boxer Lovlina Borgohain

Commonwealth Games 2022, scheduled to be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. The 24-year-old boxer from Assam said that she has made some mistakes at the World Championship where her campaign ended in the pre-quarterfinals. Aiming for gold, she has moved on from the disappointing outings at the Worlds, and is now ready to excel at the CWG 2022. Asked about the level of the competition at the CWG as many world class boxers are not participating, Lovlina told IANS on the sidelines of the ceremonial send-off of the Indian contingent in New Delhi: "Every international event is tough. I don't want to demean by saying that CWG is not a tough tournament. You have to be prepared for tough bouts. Like every international tournament, you need to be mentally strong to handle the match pressure while facing very experienced and decorated boxers.

Mirabai Chanu ready for some heavy lifting at CWG 2022 - timesofindia.indiatimes.com - Usa - Tokyo - India - Birmingham - Nigeria

Mirabai Chanu ready for some heavy lifting at CWG 2022

Commonwealth Games. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist weightlifter is aiming to re-write her own world record in Birmingham by lifting a record 90kg in snatch and another 120kg in clean and jerk to defend her Gold Coast CWG title won four years ago. The diminutive Manipuri weightlifter has, since her Gold Coast exploits, come a long way, improving upon her performance massively in clean & jerk, and holds the world record (in 49kg category) of 119kg she lifted at the Asian Championships in April last year. Her personal best is a total of 205kg, but it’s the snatch where she’s still looking to master the technique. Her personal best of 87kg in snatch (2019 Worlds in USA’s Anaheim) doesn’t justify her immense talent. Mirabai will headline the country’s 15-member weightlifting contingent which will contest in 14 different categories at the CWG. The former World champion and the rest of the squad has been camping in Birmingham since June 24, acclimatising to the conditions and undergoing a preparatory camp.
