From 1998 to 2018: India's performance in the last six CWG editions

Commonwealth Games, with the 2010 home edition being their best performance ever (101 medals). With 72 nations expected to participate in the Birmingham Games scheduled to start from July 28, Indian athletes, spearheaded by Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, are expected to do well in this edition too. There is however no shooting at the Games this time and that is likely to dent India's overall medal count. TimesofIndia.com here looks at India's performance at the last six Commonwealth Games from 1998-2018: 1998 Commonwealth Games, Kuala Lumpur (25 medals):The 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur were the last of the 20th century, but the first that were held in an Asian country. My fight is with myself at the Commonwealth Games: Mirabai Chanu

Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold at Birmingham 2022. CWG has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for lifters from India, and Mira has no qualms about admitting that, even when asked if it is because of the absence of weightlifting powerhouses China and Korea. "Yes, (when compared to other events) the competition in weightlifting is a bit less in CWG, but it's not that the absence of strong weightlifting nations makes it easier for us. It left coach Vijay Sharma worried once training resumed. The shoulders weren't as strong as before and the back not strong enough to lift the weights that Mira found easy before Covid-19 stopped practice.

CWG 2022: India's big strengths and how absence of shooting is likely to dent overall medal count

After a record breaking performance at the Tokyo Olympics last year, where they won an unprecedented seven medals including an individual gold by javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the Indian contingent will be looking to outstrip its performance in the last edition of CWG in the Gold Coast, Australia. India finished third on the medal tally in 2018, behind Australia and England, in 2018 with 66 medals including 26 gold. But their best ever showing at the Games remains the exploits in the home edition in 2010.
