Boxer Nitu Ghanghas produced a masterful display on Sunday to beat England's Demie-Jade Resztan in the final of the women's minimumweight category to give India its first gold medal in the sport in Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Nitu was in full flow, punching her way to glory as the bout was decided in her favour unanimously by all the judges. Just minutes later, ace boxer Amit Panghal was equally good inside the ring as he outpunched Englishman Kiaran Macdonald in the men's 51kg final to win his first Commonwealth Games gold, having finished with a silver in 2018.
A devotee of Lord Krishna and all things fashionable, Commonwealth Games silver medallist race walker Priyanka Goswami is an interesting melange, who aspires to be a designer of haute couture. She competed in her race walk event at the CWG here on Saturday with her fingernails painted, and her hair and kits in tip-top condition.
Star grappler Vinesh Phogat added yet another gold medal in India's kitty at the ongoing Commonwealth Games on Saturday as she brought home the yellow metal. It is important to note that it is the third time in a row at the Commonwealth Games that Vinesh has managed to win gold after winning it in the 2014 and 2018 editions as well. Vinesh entered her last round-robin bout against Sri Lanka's Chamodya Maduravlage and in a matter of two minutes and 24 seconds, she ended up sealing the gold.
Both power into respective gold medal rounds with consummate easeBIRMINGHAM: Nikhat Zareen's demeanour bears quite the change after her world championships gold a few months back. Now as she enters the boxing hall, she literally bounces into the ring. The confidence is there for everyone to see. Once inside the ropes, there is conviction in whatever she does, whether dodging, weaving, landing jabs or crosses on her opponents, she appears in complete control of herself and the situation. It wouldn't be a misplaced thought if one considers her to be India's best boxer at present, men included. There has been a world of change to the Nikhat embroiled in a battle, within the ring and outside, with Mary Kom in the winter of 2019 and the one that enters the ring now.
A drastic change in training regimen and the extra push that her family gave enabled Vinesh Phogat to turn the tide after a forgettable last 12 months during which she "hit rock bottom mentally". A premature exit from the Tokyo Olympics, where she went in as the top seed, injury issues and run-ins with the wrestling federation pushed her into an abyss.
Indian grappler Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the gold medal in the Men's Freestyle 57kg category in the Commonwealth Games 2022. He defeated Ebikewenimo Welson of Nigeria at the Coventry Arena Wrestling Mat B on Saturday. "I came here with the goal of winning a gold medal for the country and achieved it. My next target is World Championship and I will try to win a gold medal for the country there also," Dahiya said.
Vinesh entered the arena in her final round-robin bout against Sri Lanka's Chamodya Maduravlage Don amid a buzz among the spectators. Then, a silent prayer by touching the mat and placing her fingers back on her forehead. Then exactly two minutes 24 seconds later, the Tricolor was draped around her as she took a victory lap around the Coventry Stadium wrestling hall.
