Mirabai Chanu gave India a great start at the Commonwealth Games 2022 by winning the country's first gold medal in the mega event. Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg to win the yellow metal in women's 49kg weightlifting event. Chanu, who had won the gold medal at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast in Australia, was miles ahead of the competition as she picked up 88kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk. Due to her excellent performance in the snatch round, which saw her set the new Commonwealth record, Mirabai needed to just complete her first attempt in the clean and jerk round and she did it with aplomb, lifting 105kg.

On August 7 this year, on the first anniversary of Neeraj's historic gold medal finish at the Japan National Stadium when he sealed the deal with a majestic throw of 87.58m, the first National Javelin Day was celebrated in the country. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had earlier announced that from now on August 7 will be commemorated as National Javelin Day. According to AFI President Adille J Sumariwalla, this step has been taken to promote the sport at the grassroots level to encourage more and more kids to take up javelin, with Neeraj as their shining idol. As many as 32 State and Union Territory units affiliated to the AFI organised Javelin competitions on August 7. The competitions were held in various categories like, U-14, U-16, U-18, U-20 and Men's. The U-14 category of the Delhi State competition was won by 13-year-old Taksh Lohiya.

India ruled the wrestling mat in a depleted field, getting medals in all 12 weight categories and improving the gold tally from previous edition's five to six this time. Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Ravi Dahiya and Naveen finished on top of the podium in the men's freestyle category, and Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik in the women's section. India, a wrestling powerhouse among the Commonwealth nations, didn't face much problem in fending off the challenge from Canadian, Pakistani and Nigerian grapplers. Post Birmingham, India are ranked second overall behind Canada in the history of CWG wrestling competitions, winning a total of 114 medals, including 49 gold. Canada lead the chart with 69 gold, 48 silver and 30 bronze.
