Gokulam Kerala writes to PM, dials sports ministry, gets 48-hour extension at Tashkent

He mulled dialing the sports ministry, writing to the Prime Minister, getting the Committee of Administrators (CoA) involved, buying time from the Asian Football Confederation. He was desperate to pull out all the stops to see his players avoid the humiliation of returning from Tashkent without playing, barely hours after arriving there as a team about to become the first club to represent India in AFC Women's Club Championship.

CWG 2022: From tailoring to lifting weights, Achinta Sheuli scripts his own success story

The 20-year-old from West Bengal's Deulpur village in Howrah district twice bettered the Games record in both the snatch and clean & jerk and then finished with a record total lift of 313kg to make a memorable debut on the CWG stage. Achinta lifted an impressive 10kg more than his nearest rival, Malaysian Erry Hidayat Muhammad, to join his idol Mirabai Chanu (gold, women's 49kg) and his fellow teammate and a close friend, Jeremy Lalrinnunga (gold, men's 67kg), on top of the podium in Birmingham.

CWG 2022: Led by Mirabai Chanu, lifters look to start India's medal run in style

The country’s weightlifters have been the second-biggest contributor – after shooting (135 medals) – to India’s medal haul at the CWG since the sport’s inclusion in the quadrennial meet at the Auckland edition in 1950, with 43 gold, 48 silver and 34 bronze and an overall tally of 125. India had finished on top of the medals tally in weightlifting at the Gold Coast Games in 2018, bringing home five gold, two silver and an equal number of bronze medals. Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai will headline India’s 15-member weightlifting contingent, which will contest in 14 different categories at the Games. Mirabai (49kg) will be in action on the opening day of the weightlifting competitions at the NEC Arena on Saturday, along with debutant Bindyarani Devi in the women’s 55kg category. Bindyarani had won the clean and jerk gold at the women’s Worlds in Tashkent in December last year, apart from a silver at the Commonwealth meet which were being held concurrently.

Citing Kashmir, Pakistan pulls out on Chess Olympiad eve

Pakistan raised the Kashmir spectre to pull out of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Mamallapuram on the eve of the event, citing India's torch relay passing through Kashmir on June 21. The 13-member Pakistani contingent had already checked into the team hotel in Mamallapuram when they were informed they would not be taking part. In a statement, Pakistan's foreign ministry said that India has chosen to politicise this prestigious international sporting event by passing the torch relay through Jammu and Kashmir. It said the matter would be raised with the International Chess Federation. Accusing Pakistan of politicising the event, the MEA said the UTs of J&K and Ladakh "have been, are, and will remain an integral part of India."
