Allyson Felix has brought the curtain down on a legendary career with a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. For a moment, it seemed as though Felix would get the dream send-off, sprinting off ahead of the pack before Dominican Republic runner Marileidy Paulino and the Netherlands' Femke Bol overcame her.
Murali Sreeshankar became the first Indian to enter the men's long jump final at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday. He leapt 8m in the qualification round of the at the mega-event in Oregon. The 23-year-old from Kerala finished second in qualification round Group B and seventh overall. Sreeshankar could not touch the automatic qualification mark of 8.15 m but made it to the finals nonetheless as one of the best twelve performers.
Wolves were linked with signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum earlier in the summer transfer window, and it seems as if Bruno Lage has now been given the green light to swoop for the former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder.
Chelsea have reportedly turned their attentions to Presnel Kimpembe this summer, with Nathan Ake now looking likely to remain at Manchester City.
Sreeshankar, who had entered the championships as a dark horse for a medal at second spot in the season's top list, had a best jump of exactly 8m to finish second in qualification round Group B and seventh overall. Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to make it to the World Championships long jump finals and first to win a medal -- bronze in 2003 edition in Paris. Two other Indians, Jeswin Aldrin and Muhammed Anees Yahiya failed to make it to the final round after finishing ninth and 11th in Group A qualification round with best jumps of 7.79m and 7.73m respectively. Those who achieved 8.15m or the 12 best performers from across the two groups qualify for the finals to be held on Sunday (6:50am IST).
EUGENE, Oregon – The moment was both majestic, and at the same time lacking in appropriate majesty. Majestic, because the athlete was Allyson Felix, at 36 years old, the most decorated woman ever in track and field, running the last competitive lap of her life and adding yet another medal to the heaviest collection in the sport’s long history. Lacking in majesty, because the event was the second leg on a mixed 4×400-meter relay on the first night of the 18th Track and Field World Championships, but the first in Felix’s home country, in a city where she could apply to receive mail, because she has raced here so often and so brilliantly. And because the United States won a bronze medal, not gold, a minor quibble in the end.
Track legend Allyson Felix signed off her glittering career with a 19th world medal as she helped the US team to bronze in the 4x400m mixed relay in Eugene on Friday. The Dominican Republic took gold in 3min 09.82sec and the Femke Bol-powered Dutch quartet silver. It was not quite the dream swansong for the 36-year-old Felix, who received the baton from Elija Godwin on the second leg at Hayward Field but let the lead slip.
