Ravi Shastri - Roger Binny - If an India player needs to be rested in IPL, so be it: Ravi Shastri - timesofindia.indiatimes.com - Australia - India - Mumbai

If an India player needs to be rested in IPL, so be it: Ravi Shastri

Deepak Chahar, which have ruled them out of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, have triggered a debate: Should India's star cricketers be given the option of 'resting' in the IPL? Chahar had to miss the IPL due to a hamstring injury, while a back injury ruled Bumrah out of the World Cup. Former India allrounder, coach and commentator Ravi Shastri has said that resting a top India player for a few games in the IPL is an area his former 1983 World Cup winning teammate Roger Binny, who is set to be the new BCCI president, must look into when he resumes office. "With the volume of cricket that exists today, it's extremely important that you get the balance right of how much a player plays. When should he be rested? And there, a (BCCI) president can play a big role. Tomorrow, if a cricketer, for the sake of playing for India, needs to be rested in the IPL for a certain number of games, so be it. Where, a (BCCI) president has to sit with the franchise and explain that he's extremely important for India first, and then the franchise," Shastri stressed while talking to veteran journalist Ayaz Memon at a 'Meet-the-media programme' at the Mumbai Press Club on Wednesday.

National Games: Coach dies, boxer pays tribute with gold medal

Maharashtra boxer won gold in the men's middleweight category, but stood on top of the podium, devoid of any joy. He looked skywards and thanked his coach and mentor, Dhananjay Tiwari, with folded hands. Tiwari wasn't among the spectators at the Mahatma Mandir Complex's boxing arena in Gandhinagar to cheer and watch his ward secure the biggest medal of his nascent boxing career. The coach died tragically in a highway accident while riding his bike from Mumbai to Gujarat to watch his ward in action. "I cherish this medal. I will always be thankful to my coach for shaping up my career. I'll miss him," said Dubey. After winning his quarterfinal bout on Monday, Dubey called his Mumbai-based coach to inform him about his high-octane clash against reigning national champion Sumit Kundu in the semis. The excited coach readied himself for a bike ride from Mumbai to Gandhinagar. But he met with a road accident on his way and succumbed to his injuries by the time Dubey won his 75kg category bout against the Services boxer. "It was his dream that I would win my bout against Kundu and fight for the gold medal. I spoke to him on Monday and told him I was fighting Kundu. He was so excited and said he was coming for my bout. He said, 'I know you have the ability to beat him and win the gold'," an emotional Dubey said after winning the title.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Yashasvi Jaiswal Stars As Mumbai Defeat Madhya Pradesh

Young Yashasvi Jaiswal's dream season just got a bit better as Mumbai trounced Ranji Trophy champions Madhya Pradesh by eight wickets in a high-scoring group A league match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament in Rajkot on Wednesday. Batting first, MP scored 181/7 in 20 overs with RCB star Rajat Patidar hitting five sixes in his 35-ball-67. Venkatesh Iyer, who is trying to make a national comeback, came in the middle-order and hit 57 off 35 balls with five fours and two sixes. However, Mumbai made short work of the target as they achieved it in 17 overs with the flamboyant Prithvi Shaw set the tempo with 29 off 12 balls that had five boundaries.
