Test career uncertain, Ishant Sharma opts out of Ranji Trophy

With transition looming, team management wants to look beyond veteransNEW DELHI: It was a dramatic day at Ferozeshah Kotla on Wednesday. With the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) waiting till the last hour before having its selection meeting for the Ranji Trophy, officials, coach and selectors in the premises were bemused by Ishant Sharma going incommunicado for the last few days. Minutes before the meeting commenced, DDCA president Rohan Jaitley got through to Ishant and the veteran pacer informed that he was unwilling to play Ranji Trophy. Around 10 days ago, Ishant had told a member of the team management that he was keen to play the Ranji Trophy! Ishant's reluctance has come at a time when Indian cricket seems to be close to hitting the transition button in Test cricket. TOI understands that the team management is laying out a plan to move on from Ishant, Wriddhiman Saha, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. While Saha had communicated to Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) that he is not available for the Ranji Trophy, DDCA waited to hear from Ishant before picking the team which is scheduled to leave for Guwahati on Thursday morning. TOI has learnt that both Saha and Ishant have been spoken to about their future by the senior members of team management and the national selectors. "They have been told that the Indian team management is looking to groom the next line of players. Their chances of playing Tests might have dropped substantially," a BCCI source told TOI.

The Dhull-led India U-19 side was felicitated by BCCI in Ahmedabad on Wednesday during the second ODI against West Indies. Since he could not play the domestic red-ball tournament at U-19 level due to his white ball commitments with the Indian team, Dhull will get a taste of red cherry at the much tougher first-class level.

India vs West Indies: 'Flexible' Suryakumar Yadav not averse to rolling his arm over

Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday said he is ready to bowl if Team India needs additional options. Of late, India have struggled to get some overs in from a sixth bowler if one or more of the five frontline bowlers have a bad day at the office. With vice-captain KL Rahul returning to the team, India have many options in the middle order, and indications are players with multiple skill-sets could be preferred over one-dimensional ones.

2nd ODI: India juggle with options in bid to seal series against West Indies

KL Rahul back, Dhawan and Shreyas cleared to train after negative testsOne of the things Rahul Dravid did during his stints as India 'A' coach, under-19 coach, or in his position as head of the coaching staff of the Rajasthan and Delhi IPL franchises, was tinkering with the teams and batting order. He always looked to put players in new situations and take them out of their comfort zones. Sometimes, the results hurt the team's cause and affected their progress in the tournament. But it helped him unearth talent and see if players were up for the fight. Players like Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Karun Nair, Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Shreyas Iyer are just a few names that come to mind who have been under Dravid's wings at some point. "I tell them upfront, if you come on an 'A' tour with me, you will not leave here without playing a game. I've had that personal experience myself as a kid: going on an 'A' tour and not getting an opportunity is terrible," Dravid had said.
