The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League Twenty20 extravaganza begins on Saturday when holders Chennai Super Kings face Kolkata Knight Riders.
Here are the five players to watch in the two-month extravaganza.VIRAT KOHLIThe recently dethroned India captain will be desperate to end his recent dry run with the bat, having not scored an international century since November 2019, and finally win an IPL title.
Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their quest to end their seven year wait for the coveted IPL 2022 trophy when they take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener this time on March 26 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. KKR's dashing all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who was fast-tracked into the Indian limited overs teams based largely on his IPL heroics last season, is confident that KKR who are two-time champions will once again have a successful season. Last season, KKR made it to the final, but lost to CSK in the summit clash. The very tall left hand batsman, Iyer, is known for his attacking style of play and was retained by KKR ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. He played 10 matches for KKR last season and scored 370 runs at a very healthy average of 41.11. He also bagged three wickets in the 2021 edition. Iyer made headlines in phase 2 of IPL 2021. Due to his attacking style of play, Iyer was asked to open in the crucial Qualifier 2 vs Delhi Capitals. After KKR restricted DC to 135 in 20 overs, Iyer, who opened the innings with Shubman Gill, tore apart Delhi's bowling attack with a blistering 55 off 41 balls, which included 4 fours and 3 mammoth sixes. Iyer was also adjudged Man of the match in Qualifier2.
Delhi Capitals will look to go the whole distance this time, when Rishabh Pant and co. begin their IPL 2022 campaign from March 27 onwards.
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been one of the most consistent performers in all formats for the senior side ever since New Zealand's tour of India late last year. His epic outings have not only helped India secure crucial wins, but now puts him in good stead ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 season where he is set to lead his new franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. Iyer was picked by KKR in the IPL Mega Auction held in Bengaluru last month and was later appointed as the captain of the side. Having led the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise earlier, Shreyas has the ability to bring renewed energy in a new-look KKR side.
Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings have all played in IPL finals without crossing the final hurdle. In the hope to land the big prize, all three franchises have made significant changes. Will it alter their fortunes this time around?ROYAL CHALLENGERS LOST TO KKR IN 2021 ELIMINATORA few things about Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Their fans are the most loyal despite the franchise, like some Indian politicians, being performance-proof. They are their own biggest rivals, thanks to questionable calls made at the auction table and frequent chopping and changing. And, they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. They have been bridesmaids thrice (2009, 2011 and 2016). Some seasons (2017, 2018 and 2019), their performances have been so poor that even an odd win seemed as momentous as winning the title.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) have failed to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) since their triumph in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Last season, the Sanju Samson-led side ended up 7th in the points table, having finished the campaign with 10 points. RR will play their first game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 29 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Having retained the likes of Samson and wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler, the franchise roped in the likes of Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, among others during the auction last month.
The wait is finally over as the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence in few days' time. Apart from the already existing eight franchises, two new teams have been added to the tournament this season. Lucknow Super Giants, led by India batter KL Rahul, will play their first match against fellow newcomers Gujarat Titans. Apart from Rahul, the franchise has also signed some other big names, including Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who was released by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the mega auction.
