NEW DELHI : Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni believes Matheesha Pathirana could become a limited-overs asset for Sri Lanka with a light workload that does not include any test cricket.

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni on Saturday had a word of advice for young Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana: don't even get close to red-ball cricket. Referred to as Baby Malinga, as he has modelled his bowling action on the Lankan great, the 20-year pacer with sling arm action won the man of the match award after returning excellent figures of 3/15 in CSK's six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians here. Dhoni kept the bowler's sling action, which could be prone to injuries, in mind as he cautioned Pathirana and also the Sri Lankan cricket administrators against playing him in all formats of the game.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi will seek a "written guarantee" from BCCI supremo Jay Shah about Indian team's participation in 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan before committing on their national team playing its ODI World Cup games in India, later this year. The 2023 World Cup will be played from October 5 and BCCI have zeroed in on Ahmedabad (for India game), Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata as possible venues for Babar Azam's side. During the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Mumbai Indians, Dhoni wanted to bat first keeping the conditions in mind but he was completely overruled by the team management who were in favour of bowling. For CSK, the best bowlers were Pathirana (3 for 15 in 4 overs), Deepak Chahar (2/18 from 3 overs) and Tushar Deshpande (2/24, 4 overs) while Ravindra Jadeja (1/37) got the big wicket of Suryakumar Yadav.
