Diamond League meet win important for India, says Neeraj Chopra

The 24-year-old launched the winning throw with his first attempt and finished comfortably ahead of second-placed Jakub Valdeich (85.88m). His result also helped him qualify for the 2023 World Athletics Championships. Chopra was delighted to win on his comeback from a groin injury, which he picked up while bagging silver at the World Championships in Eugene and subsequently forced him to skip the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Neeraj Chopra scripts another history, wins Lausanne Diamond League title

The 24-year-old Chopra, who had pulled out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games due to a "minor" groin injury he had suffered while winning a silver during the World Championships last month, hurled the spear to 89.08m in his first attempt to seal the win in style. Chopra rested and rehabilitated for a month but it looked like the injury had not happened at all as he continued his vintage form. The 89.08m throw was his third career-best effort. His second throw measured 85.18m before passing on his third attempt.

Lausanne Diamond League: Neeraj Chopra Finishes 1st With Monster 89.08m Throw

Neeraj Chopra had his arms up in celebration before his first throw at the Lausanne Diamond League meet even landed -- a sight all too familiar. As it turns out, the attempt -- a monster 89.08m throw -- was good enough to help him finish on top and continue a rather brilliant year. None of the competitors came close to matching his throw, with Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch finishing second with a best attempt of 85.88m and USA's Curtis Thompson completing the podium. This was also the first time an Indian clinched the top spot in a Diamond League meet.

"Virat Kohli Needs To Score Runs Not Only For India But For Himself": Sourav Ganguly

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Friday said struggling batting maestro Virat Kohli needs to score runs not only for India but "for himself" too. In the Asia Cup starting in the UAE on Saturday, Kohli will resume the quest to score his first international hundred since 2019, having failed in all his previous attempts. "He needs to score runs not only for India but for himself. Hopefully it will be a good season for him. We all are confident that he'll come back," Ganguly said during an interaction.

BWF World Championships: We want to finish things on a big note, says Satwiksairaj Rankireddy

The world number 7 pair has been simply sensational this year, claiming a super 500 India Open title in January before fashioning India's epic win in Thomas Cup and then winning a maiden Commonwealth Games gold earlier this month. "It has been a dream for us, starting with the India Open, the Thomas Cup and then the Commonwealth Games gold. As I speak, I am feeling so happy and excited," Satwik said after assuring the pair of at least a bronze here.
