Mumbai Indians and national team captain Rohit Sharma welcomed the introduction of the "impact player" rule in the Indian Premier League that begins on Friday.
Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher said on Wednesday that he will have no problem in resting Rohit Sharma during the league stage of the IPL provided the captain is able to find form with the bat. Mumbai Indians will be desperate for a turn around after a poor show last year when they finished last in the 10-team IPL. With Mumbai Indians starting their IPL 2023 season with an away clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 2, the focus will also be on the workload management of the players and especially Rohit, who will lead India in the 50-over World Cup later this year in October-November. Sharma, when asked if he was open to take a backseat and rest during a few IPL games in the league round, preferred to have the question answered by the former South African wicketkeeper and coach Boucher.
Star batter Virat Kohli can also be called a synonym of Royal Challengers Bangalore as he has completed 15 years with the Indian Premier League franchise. Beginning his IPL career with its inauguration in 2008, Kohli has seen many ups and downs with the teams and emerged as the most prolific player of the franchise. The 34-year-old batter led RCB from 2013 to 2021, before Faf du Plessis took over the reins in 2022. For the past 15 years, Kohli has helped RCB claim historic wins on numerous occasions with his powerful batting performance and amazing leadership skills.
Proteas legend AB de Villiers has penned an emotional note after being inducted into IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore's Hall of Fame.
The Indian Premier League begins in Ahmedabad Friday and there will be no shortage of fireworks or glamour as the world's top cricketers slug it out for two months.
Indian cricket team legend Anil Kumble is no stranger to the Indian Premier League. The spinner was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team as a player and later, he also coached the Punjab Kings franchise. While he had the chance of watching hundreds of players – both domestic and international – perform at the competition, he picked West Indies star Chris Gayle as the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time) in IPL history. Kumble praised his destructive style of batting and how he could change any game.
The 16th edition of Indian Premier League will kick-start from Friday with defending champions Gujarat Titans taking on four-time winners Chennai Super Kings, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. With new season, Royal Challengers Bangalore will be in search of their first-ever title, as they take on Mumbai Indians in the opening match. The Faf du Plessis-led side had a decent outing in the previous season, where they won eight out of 14 matches. RCB entered the playoffs and defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 14 runs in the Eliminator. However, their happiness could not last long as they faced a seven-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 and lost another big opportunity of claiming the coveted trophy.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday inducted Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers into the RCB Hall of Fame as a mark of respect and retired the jerseys of Villiers (17) and Gayle (333) forever from its roster. RCB returned to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after a gap of three years. The fans were allowed to watch the full squad practice of RCB, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the T20, accompanied by RCB brand launches and the fans also witnessed the coming back of two cricketers who are now part of the RCB folklore -- Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers.
