NEW YORK — Top-ranked Jannik Sinner used an aggressive, net-rushing style to reach the US Open semifinals for the first time by getting past 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday night.
NEW YORK : Jessica Pegula ousted top seed Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals to continue the rich vein of American success at the U.S. Open on Wednesday while men's world number one Jannik Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev to book his spot in the semi-finals.
World number one Jannik Sinner reached his first US Open semi-final on Wednesday with a four-set victory over 2021 champion and two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev. Sinner, looking to capture his second major of the season after the Australian Open, won 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 and will take on Britain's 25th-ranked Jack Draper for a place in the final. Sinner, 23, is the only top-10 player to make the semi-finals with number 12 Taylor Fritz due to face US compatriot Frances Tiafoe, ranked 20, in Friday's other last-four duel. Italy's Sinner had defeated Medvedev from two sets down to claim the Australian Open title before the Russian gained revenge in another five-setter at Wimbledon.
As the new Labour government gets to grips with the heavy task of running the country and re-assessing the UK's finances after 14 years of Tory rule, policies announced under the previous occupants of Number 10 are starting to be scrapped. The latest such policy is an ISA that was introduced by Rishi Sunak, which some experts have called "silly."
Jessica Pegula became the fourth American to reach this year's US Open semi-finals on Wednesday by stunning world number one Iga Swiatek as Jack Draper broke through to his first Grand Slam last-four. Pegula swept past 2022 champion and four-time French Open winner Swiatek 6-2, 6-4 to reach a maiden semi-final at the majors after falling in six quarter-finals. The 30-year-old will next face Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic. If she gets through that she would set-up an all-American title match should Emma Navarro stun world number two Aryna Sabalenka in Thursday's other semi-final. Draper, meanwhile, became the first British man to make the last four since Andy Murray won the title 12 years ago by beating Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.
Alexis Galarneau will replace the injured Milos Raonic on the Canadian roster at next week's Davis Cup group stage in Manchester, England.
Leicester have won their appeal against a decision that an independent commission had jurisdiction to consider an alleged breach of the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. The English top flight said late Tuesday it was "surprised and disappointed" by the move to uphold the Foxes' appeal, which means they are set to avoid a points deduction. An independent appeal board found that Leicester's accounting period -- after it was claimed the club had exceeded the maximum permitted 105 million pounds ($138 million) loss over a three-season period -- ended on June 30, 2023, after the club were relegated from the top flight.
