Ferrari races to repair Lewis Hamilton’s car for Belgian GP qualifying after practice crash

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium: Ferrari is rushing to get Lewis Hamilton’s car repaired in time for qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix later Saturday after the seven-time Formula 1 champion hit a barrier in practice. Hamilton ran wide over a gravel trap and clipped the barrier with his rear-right wheel, smashing the suspension and causing other damage to the back of the car. “I’ve destroyed the car, mate, sorry,” he told the team over the radio. The British driver was left to watch the end of the third practice session from behind a wall as the rest of the field headed to the pits ahead of qualifying. Defending champion Lando Norris has a 10-place grid penalty, while there are also penalties for Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and the two Aston Martin drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Argentina’s Colapinto more nervous about World Cup final than F1 race

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium: Alpine’s Franco Colapinto wound up seventh fastest for Alpine in Friday practice at the Belgian Grand Prix and then said he will be more nervous watching Argentina in the World Cup final than driving in Sunday’s race. The only Argentine driver on the grid, Colapinto wore a Lionel Messi football shirt on arrival in the paddock on Thursday and spoke enthusiastically about Argentina’s 2-1 semifinal victory over England. “We hadn’t played England for a very long time and we’re just really happy that we took the win,” he said. “Happy for the team, happy for Messi — and I’m very proud of my country.” The 23-year-old Buenos Aires-born driver said Argentina’s win meant a great deal to him. “This is the kind of match that really shows why Argentina is one of the biggest teams in the history of football.

Antonelli hails team for ‘massive turnaround’ to top Belgian GP practice

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium: Series leader Kimi Antonelli hailed his Mercedes team on Friday after bouncing back to top the times in second free practice ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Italian, who also gesticulated at Carlos Sainz for what he said was “a dangerous moment” during the session, was sixth fastest in the earlier opening practice, six-tenths off the pace of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. But he improved dramatically in the second hour to clock a fastest time of one minute and 45.944, nearly-two tenths quicker than second-placed defending champion Lando Norris of McLaren. Four-time champion Verstappen was third 0.472 adrift while his Mercedes team-mate and main title rival George Russell was down in eighth, more than 1.2 seconds slower. “It was a massive turnaround with the car because in FP1 we struggled a lot more than we anticipated,” said Antonelli. “So, it was a good change, but of course we have a lot of work to do because Red Bull is quick and McLaren are up there too. “So, we just need to put things together.” - Gasly crashed heavily -
