After the Asia Cup in cricket, the focus now shifts on the 2023 Asian Games. India will be aiming to scale new heights at the Asian Games 2023 after registering their best-ever medal count at the 2018 edition. The 2023 edition of the Asian Games will start on September 23 in China's Hangzhou and will go on till October 8. The 19th edition of the Asian Games will witness a 655-member strong Indian team in action in 41 disciplines out of 61. The games will be played across 56 venues, with 481 gold medals on offer, as per Olympics.com.

Asian Games 2023: Without Single Training Session And Proper Rest, India Face Formidable China In Football Opener

Set to play their opening match without any training session and proper rest after the last-minute announcement of the squad, India will be the clear underdogs against formidable China in their Asian Games group game in Hangzhou on Tuesday. India were able to stitch a rag-tag final squad only on Friday and the team left for China on Sunday, leaving no time for the players to even have a training session together. Moreover, two players -- defenders Konsam Chinglensana Singh and Lalchungnunga -- out of the 22 players picked will join later as their visas were not ready. The Indian contingent's chef de mission Bhupinder Singh Bajwa has, however, said that the duo will get their 'express visas' in a day or two and they will join the team.

New Zealand pace ace Tim Southee will be given every chance to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup in India next month, head coach Gary Stead has said. Southee broke a bone in his right thumb while attempting to take a catch in the fourth ODI against England last week. Stead said a call on the the 34-year-old will be taken after the seamer consults specialists at home. "Until then, we can't make a call around the World Cup. We'll just need to understand the time frames and what that looks like and once we have that information, we will then be able to move forward and make a decision."

Indian Football Team Departs For Asian Games 2023 Without Two Players

Defenders Konsam Chinglensana Singh and Lalchungnunga did not accompany the Indian football team that left the country on Sunday for the Asian Games in China as their visa was not ready but a top IOA official said the duo will get their travel documents in a day or two. Chinglensana and Lalchungnunga were apparently not in the initial long list of 50 players submitted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the Asian Games and hence they did get their accreditation even though they were named in the 22-member team named in the last minute.

Team India had a day to remember as their bowling unit bundled out Sri Lanka for 50 in the Asia Cup 2023 final match on Sunday in Colombo. The main contribution was made by pacer Mohammed Siraj, who took six wickets and broke the backbone of Sri Lanka's batting line-up. The Hyderabad-based pacer has equalled Chaminda Vaas' record of five wickets in 16 balls vs Bangladesh in the 2003 World Cup. Despite giving such a dominating performance with the ball, Team India also made an error in their fielding.

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has admitted that veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin is in the scheme of things for the World Cup, following Axar Patel's injury.
