NEW DELHI : The toxic haze in New Delhi forced Sri Lanka to cancel their training session on Saturday, disrupting their preparation for Monday's World Cup clash against Bangladesh in the heavily-polluted Indian capital.
After Bangladesh, Sri Lanka were forced to cancel their opening training session in New Delhi on Saturday due to "severe" air pollution. Bangladesh, who arrived here on Wednesday, had decided against practising on Friday as the pollution levels in the city hit the "severe plus" category. Sri Lanka followed them into staying indoors on Saturday when the Air Quality Index stood at 407 in the morning. "It was cancelled owing to the air quality issue," said a SLC source, referring to the Saturday's training session. However, Bangladesh are likely to brave the pollution two days before the game on Monday. They are scheduled to train on Saturday from 6 PM.
South Africa take on India in their Cricket World Cup match on Sunday, November 5. The much-anticipated match-up will be staged at the renowned Eden Gardens in Kolkata and will commence at 2:00 PM IST. South Africa have won six out of their seven matches so far and are one win away from cementing a semi-final berth. Their only defeat came against the Netherlands where they lost by 38 runs. Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva has resigned in the wake of the national team's disappointing run in the ODI World Cup win in India. Sri Lanka lost to India by a massive 302 runs in Mumbai on Thursday. They are virtually out of the semifinal race. De Silva's resignation came after the sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe's call for the mass resignation of the SLC administration following the team's heavy loss to India. Ranasinghe, in a statement, blamed the selection committee and the SLC administration for the debacle.
Team India suffered a huge blow on Saturday as star all-rounder and vice-captain Hardik Pandya was ruled out for the remainder of the ongoing Cricket World Cup, owing to an ankle injury. Hardik had injured his left ankle while bowling during unbeaten tournament hosts India's World Cup win against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19. The 30-year-old said it was "tough to digest" that he would no longer be part of the team for the tournament. However, Hardik said he'll be cheering for the team, adding that every player will make India proud at this World Cup.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan trolled Pakistan, saying that the team needs a controversy to win a match. Vaughan comments came ahead of Pakistan's must-win game against New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup. Pakistan need to win both of their remaining games to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the tournament. Vaughan took a dig at Pakistan, saying that he was 'worried' because "it's been too calm this last couple of days" in the lead up to the match against the Kiwis.
Rohit Paudel said he was proud to lead Nepal to qualification for their second T20 World Cup.
