MELBOURNE : Australia aim to top World Cup qualifying in their Asia groups and avoid another tricky route to the 2026 finals in North America after needing to grind to reach Qatar and Russia, defender Aziz Behich said.
India remained unbeaten at the end of the Cricket World Cup 2023 group stage with a commendable victory over Netherlands in Bengaluru on Sunday. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul slammed brilliant centuries while Indian pacers continued their brilliant run of form as India won by 160 runs. This was India's ninth win on the trot and ended the group stage with 18 points. Netherlands, on the other hand, ended in the last position with just 4 points. Sri Lanka finished ninth and missed out on the Champions Trophy slot while Bangladesh ended up in the eighth position with 4 points. India will face New Zealand in the first semi-final encounter while Australia and South Africa will face each other in the second semi-final match. Pakistan ended fifth with eight points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.199.
In a heart-warming gesture, Afghanistan's opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz was spotted helping the needy people on the side of the street in Ahmedabad at 3 am. The video of Gurbaz went viral on social media with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) -- the team he plays for in the Indian Premier League -- also sharing the clip. The Afghanistan star could be seen giving money to the needy people, who were sleeping on the side of the street. "From working tirelessly to raise money for the victims of the Herat Earthquake in Afghanistan earlier this month, to this act of kindness in a foreign land - you inspire us all. God bless you, jaani," wrote KKR while sharing the video.
India openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill reach the milestone of most hundred-run partnerships this year in ODIs. The landmark came at the 45th match of the World Cup 2023 against the Netherlands at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. In 2023, Rohit and Shubman made hundred-run partnerships five times and held the top place on the list. Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz stand in second place with four 100 partnerships. Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka hold the third place. The fourth place is held by Kusal Mendis and S Samarawickrama.
Pakistan will be needing a miracle to make it to the semi-finals of Cricket World Cup 2023 when they face a charged-up England at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Saturday. New Zealand's net run-rate boosting five wicket-win over Sri Lanka on Thursday has virtually shattered Pakistan's semifinal hopes. The 1992 champions now have to beat England by an improbable margin to make it to the knockout round. New Zealand's NRR is +0.743 while Pakistan's is +0.036, and for the Babar Azam-led side to eclipse the former to qualify as the fourth side, it has to win by around 287 runs batting first. While chasing, Pakistan need to win with 284 balls to spare. That is an impractical task.
Pat Cummins on Saturday conceded Australia will be facing selection headaches going into their World Cup semifinal against South Africa, after Mitchell Marsh's 177 not out powered the five-time champions to a commanding eight-wicket win against Bangladesh in the last league game. Australia, who began the World Cup campaign with two losses on the trot, have now seven consecutive wins and will face South Africa in the second semifinal at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 16. Marsh's 177 not out (132 balls, 17x4s, 9x6s) follows a stunning knock of 201 not out from all-rounder Glenn Maxwell against Afghanistan in Mumbai last week, who single-handedly made the bulk of the runs when Australia were reduced to 91 for seven chasing 292.
England skipper Jos Buttler admitted that there will be lot of "reflection" on their premature ouster from the ODI World Cup but he ruled out any massive churning that happened after their 2015 group league stage exit during the Australian edition. In 2015, England lost to Bangladesh at group league stage and were accused of being way behind modern ODI game as Eoin Morgan transformed the side into a bunch of world beaters winning the 2019 edition at home, as all format players made way for white ball specialists.
