Ashwin (102 batting) and Jadeja (86 batting) added 195 runs (174 minutes, 225 balls) for a riveting unbroken seventh wicket stand after young pacer Hasan Mahmud (4/58) reduced India to 144 for six, despite Yashasvi Jaiswal making a solid 56.

Ravichandran Ashwin proved once again that he is one of top Test all-rounders in the world. Had it not been for Ashwin's valiant effort (102*, 112b) along with Ravindra Jadeja (86*, 117b) on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh, India would have been on a tricky spot. The Rohit Sharma-led side were reduced to 144/6 but Ashwin and Jadeja stitched a 195*-run stand - India's highest for the seventh wicket against Bangladesh in Tests. Ashwin also completed his 6th Test ton and his second in Chennai as India finished the day on 339/6.

Indian cricket team opener Yashasvi Jaiswal once again impressed as the youngster achieved a historic first during Day 1 of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai on Thursday. Jaiswal remained resilient at one end while India kept losing wickets and was able to slam a gritty half-century against an impressive bowling attack. Thanks to the half-century, Jaiswal became the first batter in the 147-year history of Test cricket to score more than 750 runs in his first 10 innings at home. The record previously belonged to George Headley of West Indies who slammed 747 back in 1935.

Former India captain Virat Kohli was dismissed for a run-a-ball six on his home Test return against Bangladesh in the first match of a two-game series in Chennai on Thursday. This was the 35-year-old's first Test match on Indian soil since March 2023 and he received a rousing reception from fans when he came out to bat at the M Chidambaram Stadium. However, he ended up playing a loose shot outside the off-stump to hand Bangladesh a dream start to the match in the morning session.

Team India star Rishabh Pant was involved in a heated exchange with Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das on Day 1 of the 1st Test in Chennai. The incident happened in the 15th over of India's first innings with Taskin Ahmed bowling to Yashasvi Jaiswal. Taskin bowled a good length a delivery to Jaiswal who defended it towards gully. Pant wanted to steal a run but was sent back by Jaiswal. As the fielder sent the ball towards the non-striker's end, it deflected off Pant's pads and went towards mid-on.
