Ferrari's Charles Leclerc set the fastest time as Formula One's winter testing ended Friday on the same Sakhir circuit which will stage the season opener next week but he admitted world champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull have "a good head start". Leclerc was 0.046sec ahead of George Russell's Mercedes while China's Zhou Guanyu was a surprise third fastest in a Sauber. The 39-year-old Briton has been with Mercedes since 2013, but recently activated a break clause to seal a move to the Italian team in 2025. "An opportunity came up in the New Year and I decided to take it," Hamilton said, describing the decision as the hardest he'd ever faced. "We have had an incredible journey together, created history within the sport and it is something I take a lot of pride in," he said.
Lewis Hamilton said he decided to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari in 2025 because the opportunity came along and he wanted to write a new chapter in his record-breaking Formula One story.
Formula One champions Red Bull and Max Verstappen, dominant last year, will start the season next week still well ahead of the rest on the evidence of testing in Bahrain, rivals said.
