LAUSANNE: The International Olympic Committee on Wednesday provisionally recognized the recently created World Boxing as the body to oversee the sport at future Games. The IOC severed links with the International Boxing Association (IBA), the long-standing ruling body of amateur boxing, over financial, governance and ethical concerns and took over the organization of the sport at last year’s Paris Olympics. The IBA is chaired by the Kremlin-linked Russian Umar Kremlev. World Boxing was founded in 2023 and boasts 78 members led by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia and Brazil. IOC president Thomas Bach had warned that boxing’s national federations needed to find a new and “reliable” international partner if it wanted to ensure that the sport features on the program at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The IOC in a statement recognizing World Boxing as the sport’s amateur federation said the body “has demonstrated strong willingness and effort in enhancing good governance and implementation, to be compliant with the appropriate standards.”
Ibrahim Zadran's majestic 177 and pacer Azmatullah Omarzai's fifer trumped Joe Root's masterful hundred, as the brave Afghanistan registered a thrilling 8-run win to knock a largely-insipid England out of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday. England are winless after two matches and in their last league match in Group B they will face South Africa, who already have three points along with Australia. Afghanistan now have two points and will have to beat the Aussies in their final group match to entertain the hopes of reaching the last eight. For a long time, England's chase merely rattled along as the dismissal of Phil Salt and Jamie Smith jolted them early. They were 30 for two then, and eventually ended up at 317 all out with a ball to spare as pacer Omarzai (5/58) struck at crucial junctures.
Former South Africa batter Herschelle Gibbs believes India stalwart Virat Kohli can play for "as long he wants to", considering his knack for scoring runs and staying fit is intact at the age of 36. Virat lived up to his reputation as "Chase Master". He orchestrated a flawless route for India to chase a 242-run target against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday in the Champions Trophy. With Virat roaring back to form with his imposing swagger and mojo, Gibbs believes the 36-year-old can go and mesmerise the spectators with his on-field performances for as long as he wants to.
India's Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni breezed into the quarterfinals of the Bengaluru Open with a straight-set victory over the Italian pair of Jacopo Berrettini and Enrico Dalla Valle in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The India duo, who are the defending champions here, won 6-3, 7-6 (4) in one hour and 14 minutes. Ramkumar and Myneni stormed to a 4-1 lead in the first set after breaking the serve in the fourth game. They wrapped up the opening set in under 30 minutes but faced stiff resistance in the second, as Berrettini and Dalla Valle broke the favourites in the sixth game.
Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime rallied past Portugal's Nuno Borges 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
Opener Ibrahim Zadran struck a Champions Trophy record of 177 to lift Afghanistan from an early wobble to 325-7 against England in a group match in Lahore on Wednesday. The Group B clash at the Gaddafi Stadium is effectively a knockout with the losing team out of the semi-final race of the 50-over tournament. Playing under the cloud of boycott calls from some British politicians over the plight of women in the Taliban-ruled nation, Afghanistan elected to bat in a bid to bounce back from their opening loss. But they soon slipped to 37-3 inside nine overs before Zadran pulled the innings together with a fourth-wicket partnership of 103 with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, who made 40. Zadran later added 111 for the sixth wicket with Mohammad Nabi, who hit 40 in 24 balls.
