Champions Trophy 2025: Afghanistan, Australia, South Africa In Fierce Battle For Semi-Final

Afghanistan's win over England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday has put the Hasmatullah Shahidi-led side in contention for the semi-final spot from Group B along with Australia and South Africa. While India and New Zealand have been confirmed as semi-finalists from Group A, the hunt for a final-four spot in Group B is set to go right down to the wire. In a must-win contest for both teams, Afghanistan edged out England by eight runs in Lahore. The result means Jos Buttler and co are now officially out of contention for a semi-final spot.

Bayern Munich reportedly withdraw contract offer to Joshua Kimmich

MUNICH: German media is reporting that Bayern Munich have retracted their contract extension offer to midfielder Joshua Kimmich, whose deal expires at the end of the season. Kicker magazine on Thursday corroborated a report from the Bild tabloid saying Bayern decided at their supervisory board meeting on Monday to withdraw the offer they made to the player because of his hesitation in accepting it. The 30-year-old Kimmich, who has played more than 400 games for Bayern since joining as a 20-year-old from Leipzig in 2015, reportedly earns around 20 million euros ($21 million) a year at the Bavarian powerhouse. The proposed new deal reportedly included a modest pay rise. Bayern’s board member for sports, Max Eberl, told broadcaster Sky this month that talks between the two parties were positive after the club announced new contract extension deals with Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Manuel Neuer. “We’ve done our work bit by bit. We’ve had very good discussions with Joshua.

Afghanistan's Rise In ICC Events: From Underdogs To Giant Slayers

Afghanistan's remarkable rise in international cricket continues to captivate fans worldwide. Since their ICC tournament debut in 2010, the team has evolved from an affiliate member to a formidable force, earning full membership status and reaching the knockout stages of major ICC tournaments. Their journey in ODI cricket began with a thrilling one-wicket win over Scotland in the 2015 World Cup. However, it was their impressive performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup that truly announced their arrival. Afghanistan defeated three former world champions -- England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka -- to secure a sixth-place finish and qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Afghanistan Skipper Agitated Over Glenn Maxwell Query Ahead Of Australia Clash: "Not Coming To The Ground..."

The Afghanistan team has chalked out plans for the entire Australian side and is not just focussed on its bete noire Glenn Maxwell, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi said on the eve of their must-win Champions Trophy match. Having knocked England out of the tournament with a memorable eight-run win here on Wednesday, Afghanistan are now seeking to get the better of Australia at the same venue on Friday and book a semifinal berth. "You think we will come only to play with Maxwell? Do you think it will be like that? We have planned for entire Australian team, and I know that he (Maxwell) played really well in the 2023 World Cup, but that's part of the history," Shahidi said at the pre-match press conference on Thursday.

Pakistan End Champions Trophy Campaign Without Win As Match vs Bangladesh Called Off Due To Rain

Pakistan's winless campaign in the Champions Trophy continued with their match against Bangladesh being called off without a ball being bowled due to incessant rain in Rawalpindi on Thursday. The match was effectively a dead-rubber, with both teams already out of contention after failing to secure a win in their two previous matches. Pakistan, hosting an ICC tournament for the first time in 29 years, had hoped for a strong finish but ended their disastrous campaign without a victory. Persistent downpour left the ground soaked, with covers in place and puddles forming around the field. With weather not improving, match officials called off the game nearly two hours after the scheduled start time. The gloomy weather prevented even the toss from taking place.

Champions Trophy: We'll Be Looking To Combat Afghanistan's Spin Through Middle Overs, Says Marnus Labuschagne

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne feels that combatting Afghanistan spinners in the middle overs will be crucial for them to come out on top in their final Group B encounter in the ICC Champions Trophy on Friday. Australia's last game against group-toppers South Africa was washed out in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, leaving them in a must-win situation against Afghanistan to progress to the last four. Australia defeated England by five wickets in their tournament opener while Afghanistan also defeated the 2019 ODI World Cup winners by eight runs in a nail-biting thriller on Wednesday.
