LONDON :Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne guided Australia to 190-2 at tea on an attritional first day of the second test on Wednesday as England's bowlers struggled to take advantage of favourable conditions at Lord's.
LONDON: The first morning of the second Ashes test at Lord’s was interrupted when two Just Stop Oil protesters ran on to the ground and scattered orange powder on the outfield, before one was carried off by England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. After the first over on Wednesday bowled by England’s James Anderson to Australia batsman David Warner, the men emerged from the stands and moved toward the square, releasing the powder before being tackled by security staff and players. Bairstow picked up one of the men and carried him off the field before dropping him to the ground outside the boundary markers. Ground staff cleared the powder and play resumed after a delay of around five minutes. “We are aware of protesters on the Lord’s Cricket Ground pitch today. Police have arrested three people and taken them into custody,” the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter. Just Stop Oil protesters have disrupted other sporting events in England this year, including the Premiership Rugby final and the World Snooker Championship.
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed out of the Mallorca Open on Wednesday in his first match with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 defeat by Yannick Hanfmann, a worrying result ahead of Wimbledon. Following another early exit on grass at the Halle Open last week the Greek was beaten convincingly by his German opponent, ranked 48th. The Wimbledon main draw begins on July 3. Strong on his serve, Hanfmann did not face a single break point in the first set and only lost one service game in the match. The German sealed his win against the erratic top seed with a forehand down the line.

Australia's David Warner made England pay for dropping him in helpful conditions with a quickfire fifty before the hosts removed Usman Khawaja after protesters briefly disrupted the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Wednesday. It looked like Australia would get through the first day's opening session without losing a wicket when, to what became the last ball before lunch, Josh Tongue bowled Khawaja, playing no shot, for 17 with a delivery that cut back in. Fellow left-handed opener Warner was 53 not out in Australia's total of 73-1. That still represented a good morning's work for Australia, 1-0 up in the five-match series after a thrilling two-wicket win in last week's first Test at Edgbaston.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland: Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh has said since the start of the war that all Russian and Belarusian athletes should be excluded from international events, including the 2024 Paris Olympics. Speaking on Wednesday a short distance from International Olympic Committee headquarters, Mahuchikh did not understand why opinions changed there after it had been pro-exclusion last year.
