Asked if the state government is mulling to bag the hosting rights for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, a senior government official, on the condition of anonymity, said he was "not aware of any such move so far".
Brazil said Tuesday it will change civil servants' work schedules so they can watch the national team play in the women's World Cup -- a concession until now reserved for the men's top-flight football tournament. The employees can start their work days later so as to take in the tournament starting Thursday in Australia and New Zealand. "It is a measure of equity to give civil servants wishing to watch the matches the same rights as during the men's World Cup," the minister for management and innovation, Esther Dweck, said in a statement. The Australian state of Victoria pulled out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday citing major cost blow-outs, leaving organisers fuming as they scrambled to keep the multi-sport event afloat. State Premier Daniel Andrews said the initial estimated Aus$2 billion (US$1.36 billion) needed to hold the Games would more likely be around Aus$7 billion, which he called "well and truly too much". "I've made a lot of difficult calls, a lot of very difficult decisions in this job. This is not one of them. Frankly, $7 billion for a sporting event, we are not doing that," he said at a press conference in Melbourne.
