India captain Harmanpreet Kaur climbed to the joint ninth spot while opener Smriti Mandhana remained fourth in the latest ICC Women's ODI rankings, released in Dubai on Tuesday. Kaur, who played an important part in her team's six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third ODI of their ICC Women's Championship series in Ahmedabad, had slipped three slots after the first two matches. However, her 59 not out off 63 balls pushed her back into the top 10. Left-hander Mandhana, who won the player of the match award for her knock of 100, added 23 rating points to reach a tally of 728, just five less than Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu in the list led by Natalie Sciver-Brunt of England with 760 rating points.
BENGALURU : India must start planning for Rohit Sharma's successor if the team do not play well in their five-test series in Australia as the captain could well retire from the longest format, former skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth has said.
SYDNEY : Australia quick Josh Hazlewood is concerned that New Zealand's stunning series sweep of India might "awaken a sleeping giant" when Rohit Sharma's touring party arrive Down Under for their blockbuster five-test series.
In an overall below-par show by the Indian team against New Zealand, wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant managed to draw some plaudits for his fearless show. Even in the third and final Test at the Wankhede stadium, where most of the Indian batters crumbled under spin pressure, Pant's solo charge kept India in the hunt for a consolation win. However, a controversial dismissal saw Pant and India's charge for a win ending just 25 runs short. For his valiant effort, the young wicket-keeper batter didn't just get the deserved appreciation from the Indian cricketing spectrum but also from the opponents.
Virat Kohli is 36 while Rohit Sharma is 37. In all probability, world cricket is seeing the final couple of years of the duo as active cricketers. After India's recent loss against New Zealand in a Test series at home, however, there have been calls from several quarters about the need to introspect regarding the team management's approach with respect to the senior duo. Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that if the duo don't score in the upcoming series against Australia, the clamour to overhaul the Indian team will only grow.
India were completely outplayed by New Zealand in the recently concluded Test series as the Rohit Sharma-led side suffered a 0-3 whitewash on Sunday. The Indian batters faced tremendous criticism from fans as well as experts with their struggles against spin bowling becoming a major point of discussion. With India taking on Australia in the upcoming five-match Test series, social media users believe that Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane should make their comeback to the national side. Both Pujara and Rahane have enjoyed a good run of form in Australia and many fans believe that they can provide the much-needed solidity to the struggling Indian batting line-up.
Delhi SG Pipers on Monday announced the signing of three-time Olympian Jacob 'Jake' Whetton of Australia for the upcoming Hockey India League season. The 33-year-old midfielder will be replacing Dutchman Jorrit Croon, who has pulled out due to an ankle injury. "It's never easy to replace a player of Jorrit Croon's calibre. Unfortunately, his recovery from the ankle injury isn't progressing as hoped, which has led us to make this difficult decision," Delhi's head coach Graham Reid stated in a release.
