India great Sunil Gavaskar has said that the results speak for themselves when it comes to judging new head coach Gautam Gambhir's tenure so far. Gambhir has been at the helm for less than six months, but has already witnessed two series losses. First, India lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka, in what was Gambhir's second series in charge. Then, India got whitewashed 3-0 in a home Test series for the first time ever, by New Zealand. Gavaskar gave his verdict on Gambhir.
Team India's horrific 0-3 series defeat against New Zealand in the Test series has seen questions being raised on Rohit Sharma's future as the team's captain in the longest format. The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy is being touted by many as the make-or-break series for Rohit's Test career. While Jasprit Bumrah is the designated vice-captain in India's Test side, a different candidate has emerged as the No. 1 choice for full-time captaincy in the books of former India batter Mohammad Kaif.
The Indian cricket team has been facing a lot of criticism following the humiliating 0-3 series loss against New Zealand that severely hampered their dreams of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. India were more or less outplayed in all sectors by New Zealand but their struggle against spin bowling became a major point of discussion. Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram believes that Pakistan can exploit that weakness and if the two teams face each other in Test cricket, Pakistan can emerge victorious. While doing commentary during the first ODI between Pakistan and Australia, Akram said that the two teams playing each other in a Test series will be "good for the game".
Australian quick Josh Hazlewood expressed that India's rare series whitewash at home to New Zealand could "awaken a sleeping giant" as they prepare to take on the ICC World Test Championship table-toppers in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from November 22 onwards. Indian team slid down to number two as the spin duo of Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips spun New Zealand to a 25-run win over India in the third Test at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, handing the hosts their first-ever series whitewash at home in a Test series of three or more matches. Speaking to Sydney Morning Herald, Hazlewood said, "It might awaken a sleeping giant, so to speak. We will see that when they come out."
Rohit Sharma and Co.'s loss in the India vs New Zealand home series has led to lot of introspection. For a team which has been almost invincible at home, the recent loss has sent shockwaves. More so, because this comes right before to Tour of Australia. The three losses against New Zealand will hurt India a lot more because it has dealt them a major blow regarding World Test Championship final qualification. Former India player Karsan Ghavri, a veteran of 39 Tests and 19 ODIs, has opined that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should retire if they don't perform in the Border Gavaskar Trophy that starts on November 22.
Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has made a staunch criticism about the footwork on display by Indian and English batters in Test cricket. India's batting has come under severe scrutiny in recent weeks, and they failed to chase down a paltry 146 against New Zealand. On the other hand, England's batting fell apart in spin-friendly conditions in Pakistan in the final two Tests. Chappell put a big question mark on the footwork of batting stalwarts like Virat Kohli, while also mentioning his dislike for the reverse sweep shot.
Pakistan star Kamran Ghulam, who scored a brilliant hundred on his Test debut against England, couldn't get his ODI career off to a promising start on Monday. With Pakistan up against the mighty Australians in a 3-match series, Kamran could only score 5 runs from 6 balls in the series opener, after being dismissed to an unplayable delivery by the opponent team's skipper Pat Cummins. Kamran tried to tease Cummins on the previous delivery, hoping to unsettle the Aussie skipper but ended up losing his wicket on the next delivery.
