PARIS: Herve Renard, who led Ivory Coast to 2015 Africa Cup of Nations glory, has returned for a second spell as coach, the Ivorian football federation (FIF) announced on Tuesday. The 57-year-old Frenchman replaces Emerse Fae, who was not retained despite guiding The Elephants to the AFCON title in 2024. Fae also took the Ivorians into the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in June, losing 2-1 to Norway in the last 32. Renard had the thankless task of being hired as Tunisia coach after they lost their opening World Cup group match 5-1 to Sweden, before overseeing two more heavy defeats by Japan and the Netherlands. He has plenty of experience in African football and also coached Zambia to an emotional triumph in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012. Renard has also had spells at Morocco, Ghana and Angola. He was in charge of Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup where they beat eventual champions Argentina in the group stage. Renard took charge of the Saudis again in 2024 but was relieved of his duties before this year’s World Cup. His first task back with Ivory Coast will be their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana in September. The finals are being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The 57-year-old Frenchman had been watching the tournament from Senegal when Tunisia abruptly fired their coach, Sabri Lamouchi, following a 5-1 loss to Sweden. With the team in chaos, Renard was asked to lead the Eagles of Carthage the rest of the way, beginning with a 4-0 loss to Japan last week and concluding with Thursday night’s game against the Netherlands. “I’m open to any discussion. I’m ready to, you know, listen to the project,” Renard said Wednesday, “but this is not what I’m here for.” The losses to Sweden and Japan mean Tunisia already have been eliminated from the knockout stage.

And the 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper hasn’t ruled out playing in Brazil, where fans helped him reach immediate stardom on social media. Vozinha said in an interview with Brazilian journalist and influencer Daniel Braune that his contract with second-division Portuguese club Chaves has ended and he wants to keep playing and is keen on finding a new team following his success in the tournament in the US, Mexico and Canada. Vozinha attracted the attention of the soccer world after an outstanding performance in Cape Verde’s 0-0 draw with European champion Spain in their opener on June 15. Cape Verde then drew 2-2 with Uruguay, one of South America’s soccer powerhouses. “I ended my contract with my previous club, Deportivo Chaves, and at the moment I still don’t have anything,” he said.
