Wrexham 1-2 Cardiff City: Bluebirds down Welsh rivals to book spot in Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Cardiff City secured both the bragging rights and a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 2-1 win over Welsh rivals Wrexham.

The Bluebirds dominated the opening exchanges, with Yousef Salech netting early to cement the visitors' command on the game. But Kieffer Moore offered Cardiff a real scare with his goal just after the break.

However it was Will Fish who proved the hero at the Racecourse Ground, lashing home his first-ever Cardiff City goal in front of the travelling fans, who erupted when the defender's volley thundered into the back of the net.

The Bluebirds struck first through Salech, who pounced on a rebound in the 13th minute after Omari Kellyman’s low shot was parried by Callum Burton. The chance came from a sloppy pass by George Thomason and it was punished ruthlessly.

Cardiff looked the sharper side throughout the opening stages, controlling possession and territory. Cian Ashford went agonisingly close to doubling the lead when his fierce drive from a tight angle was tipped on to the post by Burton, while moments later Rubin Colwill rattled the crossbar with a thunderous free-kick from 25 yards.

Ronan Kpakio should have made it two before the interval, heading tamely into the ground from six yards after a superb Ashford cross.

At the other end, well, Wrexham offered very little going forward until the closing moments of the half. Sam Smith fired wide from distance after Joel Colwill surrendered possession, but Nathan Trott remained largely untested in the Cardiff goal.

The hosts made three changes at the break, introducing Kieffer Moore, Matty James and Josh Windass, and the switch paid off quickly. Just seven minutes into the half, Moore climbed above Calum Chambers to head home from close
