The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new head coach for the men's cricket team as Rahul Dravid's stint will come to an end after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024, and if he wishes to continue, he would have to re-apply for the position, which the veteran has been reportedly denying so far. The multi-format coaching role requires the coach to stay with the team for approximately ten months with the busy men's team calendar. IANS understands that Dravid is ready to step down from the position regardless of the fact whether it ends with the T20 World Cup title or not and wishes to spend time with family.

Following the Delhi Capitals' (DC) final league game of the IPL 2024, which they won by 19 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), India pacer Ishant Sharma revealed the special bond with DC head coach Ricky Ponting, saying the Australian is like his elder brother. Ishant was the star for Delhi on Tuesday night where anything less than a loss would have confirmed their elimination from playoff contention. The position of the Indian team's head coach is up for grabs with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in search of a top candidate to replace current chief Rahul Dravid. With his current term ending after June, Dravid is unwilling to continue as the head coach. Dravid was handpicked as head coach in 2021 by the then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. His initial term came to an end after the ODI World Cup last year, but the board and the former Indian captain agreed to extend the contract till June 2024.
There has been a lot of chatter around BCCI potentially approaching former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming to succeed Rahul Dravid as the Indian cricket team head coach. Fleming is currently the Chennai Super Kings head coach and during his tenure, the team has won a record-equaling five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles. The Indian Express reported that BCCI consider Fleming as a 'suitable candidate' due to his man management skills and pedigree. However, CSK have denied any such rumours and CEO  Kasi Viswanathan said that there has been no such communication between Fleming and the franchise till now. "I have not heard anything like this. There has been no communication from Stephen Fleming to CSK either," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Sports Now.
