LIVE: Stretch of A56 closed near M66 motorway as police respond to crash

A stretch of the A56 is closed this morning due to a crash.

The northbound side of the road is closed near Bury, close to where the road joins the M66 motorway.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, it is shut from the M66 Ramsbottom junction near Edenfield to the A680 for Manchester Road, Haslingden.

Pictures show at least one police car and an ambulance on the scene.

Traffic is reportedly heavy in the area, with queues up to the closure.

Repair work is ongoing on the A56 this afternoon.

A lane closure still remains in place in both directions on the A56.

This is between the M66 and the A680 Manchester Road.

There is also a lane closure on the southbound side due to barrier repairs.

The A56 is now reportedly 'partially blocked', with traffic able to pass the scene.

The closure is causing heavy traffic on the M66 northbound.

The A56 is currently shut on the northbound side.

It is closed from the M66 Ramsbottom junction to the A680.
