Rohit Sharma will have one more chance to lead India to glory when the side gets down to action at the T20 World Cup 2024 next month.

Under Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team qualified for the final of the ICC World Test Championship final and the ODI Cricket World Cup final in 2023.

India lost both the title clashes. Now, Rohit will be eyeing redemption in the shortest format. Before the marquee event, Rohit Sharma took part in an interesting discussion where he touched upon various aspects of his international career including taking over the Indian cricket team captaincy from Virat Kohli.  "Give us an insight on what it is like to lead, succeeding someone who has got the size and personality of Virat.

Not an easy role to fill, big shoes to fill," the anchor asked Rohit on Dubai Eye 103.8 YouTube channel. "Captaining your country is the biggest honour that you can have and for me I never thought that this day will arrive where I'll be captaining one day.

India showcased a dominating performance against Bangladesh in their only warm-up game for the T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday in New York. Batting first, India posted a whopping total of 182/5 in 20 overs with Rishabh Pant scoring 53 off 32 balls. Later, Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube bowled brilliant spells as India restricted Bangladesh to 122/9 and won the match by 60 runs. This warm-up game turned out to be a great practice for India before the beginning of the group stage. But, Virat Kohli wasn't a part of the squad for the game.
If India's warm-up game against Bangladesh was a hint, Yashasvi Jaiswal doesn't seem to be the preferred option to partner Rohit Sharma as an opener in the T20 World Cup 2024. It was Sanju Samson who opened with the India skipper while Virat Kohli remained absent from the team, having reached the United States of America late. Though Rohit clarified that the team setup hasn't been finalised yet, the warm-up game was enough to understand that Jaiswal isn't the first choice for the team management.
Any warm-up match ahead of a big event often gives a fair bit of idea about what the final combination might look like. Going by that logic, the India vs Bangladesh T20 World Cup warm-up match gave a lot of hint about India's playing XI going forward. The major talking point was who would partner Rohit Sharma as opener when the T20 World Cup action starts for the Indian cricket team on June 5 against Ireland. There were two choices - Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat against Bangladesh in their ICC Men's T20 World Cup warm-up match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Saturday while also confirming that Virat Kohli missed out on a spot in the team for the only practice game before the showpiece event. The match provides India with an excellent opportunity to practice in conditions similar to those in which they will play three league games against Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States.
There continues to remain a big dilemma over Team India's opening combination for the T20 World Cup 2024. While Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have opened together in the past, Virat Kohli's IPL 2024 heroics as an opening batter have given the team management a big headache. As far as former India captain Sourav Ganguly is concerned, Kohli remains the best bet as Rohit's opening partner. Ganguly, who has also worked as BCCI's president, wants Virat to bat with the same freedom he showed during the IPL.
Just a day to go before the T20 World Cup 2024 begins, with hosts USA taking on Canada in the opening fixture of the campaign. For the Indian team, the campaign begins on June 05 when they will square off against Ireland. All of the members of the Indian team have already reached New York, where they will take on Bangladesh in a warm-up clash ahead of the marquee event. As the tournament nears, experts and former cricketers have contemplated the team's strongest XI. As Sanjay Manjrekar picked his XI, there was no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the team.
