Airdrie v Partick Thistle: Diamonds looking to make Premiership history, says on-loan Hibs kid

Airdrie star Murray Aiken hopes his side can be history-makers by playing their way to the Premiership from a fourth-placed Championship finish.

And while the Diamonds didn’t pick anything up from Firhill in the season just ended, the on-loan Hibs star says they only need to do it once, when they visit in the second leg on Friday.

Before that, the Lanarkshire side host Thistle at New Broomfield tonight [Tuesday], hoping to give themselves a lead to hold onto when they head to Maryhill.

No side has ever finished fourth and made their way through the play-offs to the top flight, but Aiken reckons Airdrie have a chance.

He said: We’ll approach it the same as any other game at home.

“We’ve been really good at home this season, so we’ll fancy ourselves to get a result and take it into the second leg, cos it’s a big one.

“It’s definitely set up for the Premiership side to stay up, but we know that over one game or two games against anyone we’re more than capable of pulling off an upset.

“I think we’ve got a good record against teams from a league above, so we’ll fancy our chances.

“But we just need to take it one game at a time.”

Aiken knows Airdrie haven’t got a good record at Firhill this past season, but says that’s in the past.

He said: “It doesn’t matter the venue, home or away. I know from the start of the season when I was playing, we played them at home and popped it about, and they couldn’t really come close to us, so we know we’re capable of playing well against them.

“It doesn’t really matter, home or away, we know we can get the job done.

“The club has come quite far since last season.

“Coming up from the play-offs was quite a big thing for the club, and us boys are hoping to do it again, so it will be good.”
