TORONTO: Ghana on Tuesday asked a Canadian court to overturn Ottawa’s decision to ban footballer Thomas Partey, a day before the Ghanaian side’s World Cup opener in Toronto. Partey, a Villarreal midfielder, is facing seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault in Britain relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022. He denies the allegations, but Canada last week refused to grant him a World Cup visa. Accra filed a request for an injunction in Canadian federal court early Tuesday, seeking to set aside Ottawa’s decision and potentially allow Partey to enter Canada and play against Panama on Wednesday. Canadian media said a judge received the request on Tuesday morning and was reviewing it. Ghana’s veteran coach Carlos Queiroz told reporters in Toronto that his side would be ready, regardless of the court’s decision. “It is not necessary to make comments. The story is open,” said Queiroz, a Portuguese national born in Mozambique. “My business is to play with the cards that I have in front of me.
MIAMI: Saudi Arabia’s sports minister says the Kingdom will work with FIFA to ensure ticket affordability and fan safety for the 2034 World Cup, amid regional instability and lessons from this year’s finals in North America where costs have been a concern.
IRVINE, USA: The United States are refusing to buy into suggestions that Friday’s World Cup Group D clash with Australia in Seattle will be straightforward, with winger Tim Weah saying the Americans are focused on preparation rather than outside noise. CBS Sports analyst and former MLS player Mike Grella described the match as a “lay-up” for the US and called Australia the “weakest team in the group.” US great Landon Donovan, now a Fox Sports analyst, tipped the Socceroos to finish bottom before the tournament and described coach Tony Popovic as “smug.” But Weah said the comments had no bearing on the US team’s approach. “All the talk is nonsense to me,” Weah told reporters at the team’s base camp in Irvine on Tuesday. “When you look at the Australian team, they are a young team that have a lot of fight, a lot of grit and a lot of hunger, just like us. “So we respect them in the same way that we would respect any other opponent. I don’t know what the media is trying to do, but we’re not really focused on that.
