A deadly Ebola outbreak in the east of the country had recorded 10 confirmed and 223 suspected deaths by May 24. ANTALYA: Iran have asked FIFA to clarify when tournament visas will be issued following the relocation of their World Cup training camp from Arizona to Tijuana, a senior official from the Islamic Republic’s national football federation (FFIRI) said on Friday. The national team came from behind to beat Gambia 3-1 in a World Cup warm-up match in the Turkish city of Antalya, days after their tournament preparations were disrupted by a base camp relocation to Mexico following approval from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and FIFA. Iran are scheduled to play all three of their group matches in the United States but the team’s participation in the June 11 to July 19 tournament has been in question since the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February. The relocation followed diplomatic friction and visa complications, with Iran now requiring cross-border clearance for their Group G matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Los Angeles and Seattle. Mehdi Mohammadnabi, first vice president of FFIRI, told Reuters that Iran had written to FIFA seeking a firm answer after earlier applying for visas. “We sent an email to FIFA today and asked them to announce the result as soon as possible, to say on what day the visas will be issued, because we now need both multiple-entry Mexican visas and multiple-entry US visas,” Mohammadnabi said. “Based on the latest conversation we had, they replied that the administrative process will most likely be completed this week,” he added. Mohammadnabi said FIFA had proposed the Tijuana camp and Iran had accepted the arrangement. “FIFA proposed this camp, and FIFA should tell you what has happened,” he said.

HONG KONG: A Hong Kong court has sentenced two soccer players and a betting agent to up to 17 months in prison for bribery, match-fixing and illegal gambling in a prominent sports scandal. The two players, Brian Fok and Luciano Silva Da Silva, and the betting agent, Waheed Mohammad, schemed to fix results in the 2022-23 season to win money through illegal gambling, the city’s Independent Commission Against Corruption, which led the investigation, said in a statement Friday. Their acts included intentionally causing Fok’s team, Happy Valley Athletic Association, and Silva Da Silva’s team, Central and Western District Recreation and Sports Association, to lose matches, or manipulating the number of goals or corner kicks through fraud in the second tier of the Hong Kong league. The trio also placed illegal bets on more than 30 matches involving their teams based on pre-determined results and match-fixing arrangements, it said. The court also heard Fok had previously offered bribes, ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 Hong Kong dollars ($1,276 to $3,828) to two other players to help rig results at a club in another league, but those players rejected him, the anti-corruption agency said. Fok received a 17-month prison term, while his two other co-defendants were each sentenced to 14 months and four weeks. Magistrate Peter Yu, who handed down the sentences, reprimanded the defendants for deliberately manipulating matches, undermining the integrity of Hong Kong sports and the principle of fair play, the statement added.
Former England star Sterling arrested for suspected drug-driving
LONDON: Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after he allegedly crashed his car into motorway barriers, police said Saturday. The former England winger, who most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, is suspected of crashing his Lamborghini into barriers on the M3 motorway in Hampshire, southern England, on Thursday morning. The 31-year-old has been released on bail pending further enquiries. In a statement, Hampshire Police said: “Just before 9:00 am (0800 GMT) on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. “No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. “The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen.
