French Open: Kostyuk knocks out former champion Swiatek in last 16

PARIS: Iga Swiatek’s 25th birthday celebrations turned sour at the French Open on Sunday as the former champion lost 7-5 6-1 to Ukrainian 15th seed Marta Kostyuk, her bid for a fifth title ending just when she had looked to be rediscovering ‌her rhythm. There ‌was little to separate ‌the duo in the early exchanges as they twice traded breaks, before Kostyuk came up with a tight hold in the 11th game and raised her level at the end to claim the opening ‌set with ‌a backhand crosscourt winner. It was the first ‌time that Kostyuk had taken ‌a set off the third-seeded Pole after three straight defeats in their previous meetings, and she sensed a ‌big upset when she went ahead 3-1 in the next set after a battling effort. The Rouen and Madrid champion held her nerve from there to take her record on clay this season to 15-0, and book a meeting with seventh-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina or 11th-seeded Swiss Belinda Bencic in the next round of Roland Garros.

PSG’s Champions League win marred by riotous celebration, 780 arrested

PARIS: French authorities announced 780 people were arrested across the country when celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal were marred by violent clashes, and a road accident that killed a young man. Thousands of people poured into the streets of Paris for the match and to revel in PSG’s triumph. But some mobs clashed with police, around 22,000 of whom were deployed across France after unrest last year when PSG also won the competition. Highlighting an increased use of fireworks directed at law enforcement, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said in a press briefing 57 security forces were injured and that there had been “219 participants injured in France, including eight seriously.” The Paris public prosecutor’s office announced the death of a young man following a motocross bike accident on the Paris ring road, and said a person was wounded with a bladed weapon in the capital and was in a critical condition. Nunez said the 780 arrests was a 32 percent increase compared to the celebrations of PSG’s Champions League win last year.
